When you review your credit report, you may find accounts that are not accurate. This is really common. It may be an account you don’t recognize and don’t remember opening, or an account you do recognize, but with information about the account that isn’t accurate.
If there is an inaccurate account on one credit report, it’s a good idea to check your credit reports with the other 2 credit bureaus; the inaccurate information may be on all 3 reports.
You can dispute inaccurate information. You should dispute it with the credit bureau (Equifax, Experian, or Transunion) and with the creditor who is reporting the information.
To dispute the inaccuracies with the credit bureau, follow the directions on the Equifax, Experian, or Transunion websites. It is free to open an online account and free to file a dispute with all 3 credit bureaus. There are also mail-in options, although they will take longer.
