To help you decide what to do about your overpayment, start with this question:
Is anything about the overpayment incorrect?
Maybe you were overpaid, but the notice has the wrong amount. Maybe Social Security didn’t have all the facts and the whole thing is wrong.
If anything about your overpayment is incorrect, your first step is to Request a Reconsideration. Keep working through the toolkit to learn more about the form and how to complete it.
The Request for Reconsideration may make your overpayment amount smaller or get rid of the overpayment altogether. When this form has been processed and a decision has been made, you may need to request a waiver of overpayment or request a change in recovery rate.
If your overpayment is correct, you can pay the amount requested, request a waiver of overpayment, or request a change in recovery rate. Keep working through the toolkit to learn more about each option and how to complete the forms.

Tip: If you do not know if your overpayment is correct or incorrect, you can ask Social Security for more information. Your notice should give a reason for the overpayment. A Benefits Planner can also help you understand your overpayment and decide what to do.
