If you start working, the amount of SSI you get will go down; but, you still have your income from work. Most people will have more money every month if they are able to work.
To find out how much your SSI check will be, you need to know how much you will earn before taxes and other deductions.
Here’s a quick and easy way to estimate what your SSI check will be:
Here’s an example:
Shania gets $967 in SSI. She started a new job and earned $500 before taxes.
Step 1: Subtract 85. 500 – 85 = 415. Step 2: Divide by 2. 415/2 = 207.50 Step 3: Subtract from your current SSI payment. 967-207.50= $759.50.
The new SSI payment is $759.50. Shania also has $500 of income from work, so her new total income is $1,259.50.
You can use this auto-calculating worksheet, if you don’t want to do the math yourself! Remember that this is an estimate, and there may be other factors.
