If you start working, the amount of SSI you get will go down; but, you still have your income from work. Most people will have more money every month if they are able to work.

To find out how much your SSI check will be, you need to know how much your income will be. You can use an estimate if you aren’t sure.

Here’s a quick and easy way to estimate what your SSI check will be:

  1. Take your income and subtract 85.
  2. Divide that number by 2.
  3. Subtract that number from your current SSI amount, and you’ve got your new SSI amount.

Here’s an example:

Shania gets $967 in SSI. Her business just started making money, and she has $500 in income.

Step 1: Subtract 85. 500 – 85 = 415. Step 2: Divide by 2. 415/2 = 207.50 Step 3: Subtract from your current SSI payment. 967-207.50= $759.50.

The new SSI payment is $759.50. Shania also has $500 of income from her business, so her new total income is $1,259.50.

You can use this auto-calculating worksheet, if you don’t want to do the math yourself! Remember that this is an estimate, and there may be other factors.
