If you are working, you have to report your income every month to Social Security. You need to report by the 6th of the month after the month you earn the income. For example, if you earned income in May, you need to report it by June 6th.

When you first start working, you need to call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or go by your local office. You will need the name of your employer and the amount of your wages before taxes. Ask them to set you up with one of the options for monthly wage reporting. Some methods don’t allow for reporting work incentives, so you will need to think about that when you choose.

You can choose one of these options for monthly wage reporting:

To wage report you need your paystubs; if you are using work incentives, you will also need documentation of your work incentives.

For ongoing reporting, you need to use your chosen method to submit your paystubs and work incentives documentation (if needed) every month, by the 6th of the month.

Tip: Set up a system! It’s a good idea to plan out how you will wage report. Where will you keep your paystubs and documentation? Are they electronic or paper? What day of the month will you report, and how will you remember to do it? Where will you save your confirmation of reporting?
