If you are applying for benefits, Social Security will only communicate with you about your claim. If you want Social Security to communicate with someone else on your behalf, you need to have that person become an Authorized Legal Representative.

If you are helping someone else apply for benefits, you will likely need to become their Authorized Legal Representative. This is true even if you have Power of Attorney or a Guardianship for the applicant; you still need to become the Authorized Legal Representative.

Becoming an Authorized Legal Representative is a 2 step process.

Step 1: Complete the Representative Registration Form. It may take several weeks to process. When it is processed, you will receive a Representative ID number.

Step 2: Request to become the Authorized Legal Representative for the applicant by completing Form SSA-1619. You will need your Representative ID number and the claim number for the applicant.
