This is an overview of the application process. Each step will be described in detail in this toolkit.
Step 1: Write a narrative about the impact of the disability
Step 2: Gather medical records, and educational records if that applies to you
Step 3: Start the application
Step 4: Complete the Adult Disability Report and the Function Report
Step 5: Complete the interview (every SSI application will require an interview, and some SSDI applications may require an interview)
Step 6: Receive notice of approval or denial

Tip: Social Security can request records on your behalf, but it may slow down the process. Gathering records yourself may speed things up, and having your records will help you complete forms and prepare for the interview.
